Most people will rest for a while and wait for the pain to subside, before returning to the same behaviour, thinking that the body has already healed. And then at a later date, the same body part gets injured again, only that it’s worse now. Why is that so?

The only way to be healthy is to identify the cause and provide specific treatment.

What are Spinal Nerves?

Spinal Nerves control our body parts and provide feedback to our brain for coordination. It originates from the brain, passes through the spinal column, and spreads throughout our body. The muscles, organs, and metabolism are all controlled by the spinal nerves, and they need to receive the correct signals to function properly as a whole.

  • As such, when there are interruptions in the pathway, the signals are not delivered correctly to the muscles and organs, and the feedback to the brain is sabotaged. Pain, numbness, and other symptoms soon follow as the result.

How can the nerve signals be interrupted?

整條脊椎骨是以7節頸椎、12節胸椎、5節腰椎、骶骨和尾骨等骨節形成

The spinal cord travels through the spine, with 7 cervical segments, 12 thoracic segments, and 5 lumbar segments, in addition to the pelvis. The spine protects the spinal cord, and is responsible for the structure of the body. When the spinal cord exits the spine, they become spinal nerves.

脊骨錯位指脊椎骨骨節不在正常的位置上

When one or many segments are out of place, this misalignment changes the structure of the body, and exerts unneeded pressure on the spinal nerves, and interrupts the integrity of the nerve signals. This is called a subluxation. Throughout our daily lives, there are many factors that can contribute to the formation of a subluxation.

What happens when the spinal nerves don’t function properly?

脊骨神經受損傷或干擾,將產生不適感及痛症

When there are interruptions to the nerve signals, there will be discomfort and dysfunction, be it acute or chronic. Besides the physical problems, the mind is also affected as a healthy mind can only exist in a healthy body. As time goes on, there will be hindrances to the daily activities, both physically and mentally.

Introduction to Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic is a form of manual therapy specialising in treating the maladies that arise from subluxations. Professionals who practise it are called Chiropractors.

How does Chiropractic help me?

脊醫以專業手法檢查顧客脊椎骨

The chiropractor will start by gathering information, by conversing and discussing with the patient their concern. This includes the patient’s current condition and history. There will be some tests and examinations, followed by x-rays if the situation warrants it. Combining everything that is known so far, the chiropractor will provide a personalized treatment plan for the patient to ensure speedy recovery and continued wellness far into the future.

Treatment Methods

In Chiropractic, manual adjustments of the joints is the backbone of the treatment. In addition to that, professional tools such as the chiropractic bed, shockwave therapy, and customized insoles can be part of the treatment plan to help the patient regain their health.

The Chiropractic Bed

The chiropractic bed is a specialised platform on which the patient is adjusted, with levers and functions to help the chiropractor adjust the patient in the most suitable way for the patient.

Focused Shockwave Therapy

脊醫會用衝擊波治療儀為病人提供脊骨治療及保養

Focused Shockwave Therapy (FST) is used for situations that involve the soft tissue,  such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Compared to Radial Shockwave, FST provides higher energy and deeper penetration to better target the involved tissue and facilitate faster recovery.

Taking Care Of Your Spine

I’m feeling fine right now, so I don’t need to see a Chiropractor, is that right?

The spine needs proper care and regular maintenance, just like our teeth, regular cleaning is necessary to keep them in good condition. In our daily life, our body movements will inevitably deviate from the most optimal path and positions. These deviations will accumulate over a long period of time, turning into subluxations, which will cause varying symptoms including pain and dysfunction. As the symptoms persist, other health problems will also follow, both physically and psychologically. As the saying goes, ‘Prevention is better than cure’, periodical maintenance on the spine is essential to a healthy lifestyle.

I don’t have any more pain after the last visit, therefore I don’t have to continue treatment, right?

After a series of chiropractic treatments, the body is gradually getting back to a healthy state. As the pressure on the nerve is relieved, the pain and initial symptoms may reduce or disappear. However, this does not mean that the misalignments are fixed or the body is healed. Oftentimes, the misalignments are not yet stable. If the treatment is stopped at this stage there is risk of the joints getting misaligned again and the symptoms returning. Continuing the treatment plan until the joints are fully stable is essential for a complete recovery.

Common Symptoms

Headache

頭痛

Many are troubled by chronic headaches that they can’t seem to fix despite trying various treatments. Headache can be caused by a number of factors, and the connection to the human body is widely neglected. As the human body is experiencing discomfort, the head can be affected too. As an example, a misaligned pelvic will throw off the balance, needing the neck and head to compensate for the off-balance, and cause headaches as time goes on.

📍Symptoms: Dizziness, nausea, forehead tension, visual anomalies, hallucinations, paralysis.

Treatment: Adjustment of misalignment, posture correction, restoration of the curvature of the cervical spine.

Neck Pain

頸椎痛_頸痛

Pain around the neck and shoulder area are common symptoms among the urban population. One common problem, the Stiff Neck, happens after waking up from sleep and is painful when moving in some or all directions, and muscle tightness or headaches may also be present. The neck is actually quite delicate, and yet it is responsible for  a huge range of motions, which is why it is easy to get overused and become misaligned.

📍Symptoms: Muscle tension, pain around the neck, reduced range of motion of the neck, dizziness, hand paralysis, balance disorders.

Treatment: Adjustment of cervical subluxation, relaxation of peripheral tissues of the neck, correction of posture, training to strengthen neck muscles, proper use of pillows.

Upper Back Pain

Upper back refers to the area around the scapula, right in front of it are the lungs, heart, and stomach etc. Upper back pain is especially likely to occur if one maintains a slouched posture for extended periods, be it due to bad habits or work requirement. As an example, desk jobs that require interfacing with documents or the computer predisposes one to such a posture. This causes reduced joint mobility in the thoracic spines and may affect the function of the lungs and heart, in addition to causing muscle soreness and tightness.

📍Symptoms: Muscle tension around the shoulder blades, impaired breathing, poor cardiopulmonary function, slouched posture.

Treatment: Adjustment of misalignment, stretching, exercising back muscles, correcting posture, breathing training.

Low Back Pain

Low back pain is one of the most common problems. It can happen to anyone, not just those engaged in manual labour, though they are the most commonly afflicted by it. Repeated motions that involve the lumbar and waist, in addition to prolonged fixed posture such as those on the office or factory workers, can easily cause the lumbar joints to misalign, causing pain and other symptoms. In addition to that, if the problem develops into something that involves the disc, it will be harder to recover from. Symptoms from the low back pain are not limited to the local area of the cause, they may be present in the lower limbs as numbness or weakness or balance issues.

📍Symptoms: Herniated disc, pain, paralysis, weakness, limited range of motion, incontinence, poor balance.

Treatment: Adjustment of misalignment, postural correction, physical exercise, use of lumbar seals

Wrist Pain

Usually the symptoms start with fatigue and soreness in the hand and the wrist, which can develop into numbness and pain. Usually fatigue of the hand and forearm muscles can be remedied with using a massage gun, visiting a masseuse, or resting. However, one has to be on alert if the problem becomes occurring and increasing in severity. Problems in the upper limbs may be caused by misalignments in the cervical, as that is the source of the nerves in the arms. One has to consider such factors when dealing with wrist pains that keep returning.

📍Symptoms: Frozen shoulder, weakness, paralysis, cramps, hot and cold, hand joint pain.

Treatment: adjustment of misalignment, posture correction, shock wave therapy, sports massage, stretching.

Foot Pain

腳痛_腳麻痺_膝蓋痛

Foot pain is a common issue for many, and something that is difficult to heal from, reason being that being ambulatory involves the legs most of the time. Accidents can cause foot pain, but most of the time it is caused by the insidious daily activities putting extra stress on the lower limbs. Some may be unaware of their leg length inequalities until symptoms develop, some may unknowingly form bad habits that hurt the low back causing compressed nerves with symptoms showing up in the lower limbs.

📍Symptoms: ‘halberd’ feet when walking, poor balance, paralysis, cramps, swelling, knee weakness, foot shape deviation, joint pain.

Treatment: Adjust sitting posture, shoe pads, stretching, muscle exercise, shock wave therapy, sports massage.

FAQ

Is chiropractic care safe?

  • Chiropractic treatment is safe. Similarly to Western medical practitioners, chiropractors have to study pathology, clinical practice and even anatomy, and the study and training period takes 4 to 6 years, plus internship training, before they can practise. In Hong Kong, only qualified persons are allowed to register as chiropractors, and they have to strictly abide by the relevant professional code of practice. This is a guarantee of confidence and safety.

  • In recent years, after international exchanges and studies, the comprehensive results show that the risk of side effects of chiropractic treatment is less than one in a million, in essence almost none, which makes chiropractic treatment a safer choice for the majority of people.

How does chiropractic treatment work?

  • Chiropractic treatment is non-invasive. Chiropractors do not prescribe medication or perform injections. The chiropractor will carry out a series of manipulation and correction according to the results of the examination, as well as the direction and angle of the misalignment of the bones as shown in the X-ray, and will adjust the strength and method according to the patient's physical condition, in order to provide the patient with an appropriate and personalised treatment.

What is the difference between chiropractic treatment and physiotherapy?

  • Chiropractors and physiotherapists have very different starting points even if they are dealing with the same symptoms. A chiropractor starts with the function of the nervous system and analyses the alignment of the bones and joints to obtain a full picture of the body’s condition.

Chiropractors use manipulation techniques to restore misaligned  joints and bones to their normal position, ensuring that the nervous system is functioning properly and that nerve signals are being sent and received properly, thus stimulating the body's ability to heal itself.

Can I receive chiropractic care if I have had surgery or have implants in my body?

  • Whether the patient has a cardiac pacemaker, screws, steel plates or other implants, the chiropractor can treat the patient. During the examination, the chiropractor will discuss the details with the patient, and after a thorough understanding of the patient's condition, the chiropractor will apply manipulation according to a mutually agreed plan. Good communication will be maintained during the course of treatment, and the treatment will be fine-tuned to help the patient regain health.

Can children see a chiropractor?

  • Yes, children can see a chiropractor. Unlike adults, children have immature bone structure, but the distribution of the nerves is the same, so they will also have subluxation problems. In fact, as children are developing, their bodies are changing rapidly yet they do not notice any abnormalities in their bodies. Often, it is only after growth and development are complete that abnormalities are noticed, but the bones and joints are already in place and it may take more time to change or correct them. Therefore, children should see a chiropractor and receive adjustments as early as possible to help them grow with as few misalignments as possible. Prevention is better than cure, and the earlier the problem is detected, the easier it is to deal with.

Can elderly people see a chiropractor?

  • Yes, they can. As we get older, we tend to accumulate some illnesses and pains, but most of these are caused by chronic fatigue, improper posture, or poor lifestyle habits. Some people in their twenties suffer from aches and pains, while others in their fifties can still move around freely. This shows that diseases and pain are not inevitable in aging..

  • One common consideration that the elderly have is Osteoporosis. The loss of calcium in the bones, including the spine, causes changes in the movement of the vertebrae and pressure on the nerves. These misalignments are precisely the scope of chiropractic treatment. Just like teeth, if we provide proper protection, regular adjustments and maintenance measures, we can ensure that the spine and nerves function properly.

Can pregnant women see a chiropractor?

  • Yes, they can. In fact, pregnant women have a greater need for chiropractic care. When a woman is pregnant, her body undergoes tremendous changes in her centre of gravity, the load on her joints, hormones, etc. All of these physiological factors place a burden on the nervous system and the joints, especially in the lower body and pelvic region. Chiropractic care can help the pregnant women maintain balance, flexibility and flexibility of the body to ensure normal functioning of the body, as well as alleviate the pain of pregnancy. Maintaining the correct position of the pelvis can help to facilitate a smooth labour, and is also of great help in postnatal recovery.
